Now I know anyone can make an apple pie, but Gramma’s was the best! She used to let me help her make them every now and then. Her secret, as told to me in the highest confidence (wink), was SUGAR. She’d say, “Lots and lots of sugar!” Over the years, I, too, have perfected apple pie.
HERE’S MY RECIPE:
8 Cups apple slices tossed with 2 Teaspoons of lemon juice. Combine 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Spoon about half of this into pie crust, add apple slices, then add the rest of the sugar mixture. Dot with 1 to 2 tablespoons of butter. Top crust edges should be pinched. Sprinkle top of crust with 1 tablespoon sugar.
Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes then at 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes more.
