Directions

Cream shortening. Sift in flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, baking soda and spices. Add brown sugar and buttermilk. Mix until all flour is dampened; beat vigorously 2 minutes. Add eggs; beat 2 minutes more. Pour batter into a 9 x 13 greased and floured pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 – 35 minutes. Mom always frosted this cake with the Penuche frosting recipe below:
